Description:

This project is part of the “Priority of Medicines for Children program” which has as ultimate goal to stimulate drug research in children, both at a national and an international level, to guarantee safe and effective drugs in children. Using data from two large Dutch automated health care databases namely IPCI (Integrated Primary Care Information database – a primary care database) and PHARMO RLS (a pharmacy database), a cohort of children with asthma, aged 5 years or older will be defined. Within this large asthma cohort, currently available asthma controller therapies will be compared in terms of effectiveness (prevention of serious asthma exacerbations requiring hospitalization) and in terms of safety. In addition, genetic variability in treatment response will be investigated through genetic analysis of blood (or Buccal Swabs for the youngest children) with hospitalization for asthma exacerbation and other predefined events as endpoint. This research will be carried out at the department of Medical Informatics in collaboration with the department of paediatric respiratory diseases of the Erasmus-MC.
